Naked City Guide

Gold Coast City Gallery

At age 25, you’re no spring chicken but you’re not sporting crows feet either. That pretty much sums up our city’s official gallery. Created in 1986, it’s dually fond of bright young things and legacy artists. The twin spaces are chock-full of curated and travelling exhibits, with over 3000 acquired works stashed away in the back dock. You might say it’s like a shiny weather vane that shows us which direction we’re blowing as a city, with though-provoking exhibitions curated around timely issues. Highlights from 2011 include stencils of modern architecture by Paul Davies, contemporary video art in Korea – Reimagining the City, and scale and size up for debate in Does My Art Look Big in This? Look sharp for an absolute gale of culture in 2012 starting with Sons of Beaches ’72, an investigation of subversive 70s surf culture through documentary and installation (Feb through to March).
