Elk Espresso

Except with shin pads and studded boots on (sports field over the road duly noted), there isn’t one conceivable reason for coffee-drinking ilk to linger north of the Broadie strip. No reason before Elk opened up, that is. While we may not get a squiz at recipes for their famed ‘omg’ slice, gypsy eggs or crème brulee thickshakes any time soon, the recipe for this bustling cafe is as follows: Adopt a humble brick building near the beach; Preserve the 20 year old patchwork of plaster, concrete and sea-green paint on the walls; Add sprinklings of design classics, a lush fern wall, sweets made instore and a specialty bean blend by Marvell Street Roasters; Serve with sun and welcoming smiles for all who enter.

Did we come this far without mentioning the iconic hand-drawn elk (nicknamed Princess Mononoke) who’s pipped the dolphin across the road for Broadie’s #1 mammal mascot? Or sporadic events like curry by candlelight? Hop on facebook lickety-split for up-to-the-minute updates, and don’t forget they do functions too.
