Somewhat less intimidating than its sea god namesake, this generous-spirited community theatre company has long been the southern end’s go-to for robust trills and chorus line kicks.
Besides staples like Annie, Neptune is known to revive rookie musical scripts like last year’s Lola Montez, based on the true story of a controversial Goldfields-era entertainer famous for her ‘Spider Dance’ (is that concept not ridiculously intriguing?!). The 2012 program kicks off with merry murderesses in a vaudeville adaptation of Chicago before the curtain goes up on Guys and Dolls (backed by philharmonic orchestra). In January, youngsters aged 5-18 can live their Gleek fantasies inĀ theatre workshops run by qualified tutors. Neptune is about giving people from all walks of life a chance to connect with the community, and that’s something even the most aloof theatre-goer can get behind (while secretly mouthing the words to ‘Mr Cellophane’).
